Love your work and get paid for doing it

Love your work and get paid for doing it

Important stages to getting paid for freelance work.

Stages
Client interest/Contract
Take a view of the client brief
Discuss the brief with client to understand required content and outcomes
Evaluation and estimation of timeframe and content expected at a rate per hour or project
Remember to add on costs of extra materials
Itemize and estimate all the content needed and timings

Request an order number to apply to the invoice, rather than a name to send work off have a specific order number to link your work to there accounts. Client should respect this and should link to there accounts department or marketing department.

Before you start get 50% upfront and purchase order number.

Invoice needs to include date, order number, reference number, banking details and itemized elements (what stages I have done)

Presentation overview & Feedback

Presentation overview & Feedback

Overview & Notes

What I want out of the year and what I want to be doing to get there, focusing on my presence, placement opportunities, investigation and exploration into focused disciplines and issues.
Importance of tying together contextual aspects, professional aspects and practical skills.

Me and Joe want to start up a studio so this was a focus within this slide, not only the business itself but an exhibition revolving around risograph printing to bring some exposure in on us. A placement would benefit in learning about how things work professionally but also possible employment while possibly running equip on a part time basis if work was slow, just to keep the money coming in.

Networking will be a focus too through events and social media, re-doing my Linkedin creating it more personal rather than under last years Blank Pigment studio name which is not non existent, pushing a professional image through Behance and gaining some recognition that way is important too this year.

A few areas I have been investigating over the summer relating to my COP plans and how I want to approach extended practice, I produce a poster and some experimental type as a practical investigation on some of these subjects.

My COP question subject to change but already I have started looking into certain areas that relate to typography, the internet, technology and progress within the creative industry.

A few briefs have been clarified and wrote, all been underpin by subjects revolving around COP but offering a variety of outcomes and benefits from engaging with them.

Hoping for visiting professionals to work alongside my plans this year, Dr Me and Ditto Press especially to help influence ideas of the relationship between hands on and digital & contemporary and tradition (Dr Me) and hopefully Ditto Press will help spark ideas for the riso exhibition.

Il be keeping an open mind when it comes to changing my briefs and plans during the year as the main aim is to be employed or running equip successfully at the end of the year.

Feedback & Progress plan
Overall feedback was good , although it was suggested I had a lot going on and need to focus down on what underpins this year in a more concise and focused way. I totally agree with this as from the start of the presentation I was confusing myself with all the different subject areas I was discussing.

To help synthesis COP, PPP and Extended practice as I proposed I think narrowing down to 2-3 key areas of investigation will be beneficial, at current typography, technology and print within a digital age will tie together nice. All briefs within extended practice should consider these thoughts in various ways to keep things well informed yet still allow me to create diverse outcomes due to the nature of the briefs and there possible outcomes.

Keep an open mind to external events, exhibitions to submit too to get some good possible recognition.

Engage with live briefs from visiting professionals, this is a good way of engaging with briefs from people involved in the creative sector, challenging myself more than academic and self initiated briefs hopefully learning some skills that will influence my professional practice while also been an opportunity to network.

Begin NOW looking for studios that resonate with my ways of thinking if possible, if not any experience is good experience not only for future employment but to feed into mine and Joe's plans with running and starting up studio equip.

Begin research driven travel brief with:
Choice Cuts Exhbition
Manchester Artist Bookfair
Light Night
Baltic Mill

Plan time every week to learn software and coding to fulfill my aims; after effects, dreamweaver, font lab.

Contact footprint regarding risograph exhbition and start thinking of ideas with Joe of possible locations.

Get COP question finalized and some research gathered around a few possible subjects that resonate around question.

PPP 3 Introduction & 24 Hour Task

PPP 3 Introduction & 24 Hour Task

Module overview

Reflection on last 2 COP modules and evaluate and reflect on old work, how its changed, why its changed, what my new aims are, my new influences and interests etc.
2 Week minimum placement.
Self directed.
Research studios that are going to influence and inform my current practice more.
Reflecting on the year as it goes on, evaluation of the year in terms of work I produce both professional and academic over extended practice and context of practice modules.
Reflect and review on all conversations and engagement with work placements or business aspects planned with Joe Lindley regarding risograph and equip design studio.
Engage with external events both visiting and producing work for these events = external recognition and good networking opportunities with other creatives.
Consider cross collaboration with other creatives outside of graphic design to understand more professions within the creative industry and gain contacts and a wider range of work produced.
Research studios for placement and networking opportunities.
Travel learn and do, influence my professional and creative practice from visits and events.

YOU Task
Context
Been influenced by factors outside of Graphic Design is what makes designers unique in how they approach problem solving and in turn provide a unique influence on there practice. Key points about me that provide outside influence to my creative practice that can be turned into a concept that communicates me are:
Appreciation of technology & progress
Niche interests
Neat yet bold overall style
Alternative way of approaching problems dont just consider the one approach, approach it from different angles.
Hands on person.
Independent & Self directed.
Organized & Methodical, work in a sequential way through set tasks for most things.

Scamps & Ideas
To communicate these ideas a few scamps were created, the main idea was to use contrasting imagery from scanned in analogue imagery and vector based imagery to not only communicate a hands on process and multiple approaches but also ideas of technology through the use of software and scanning hardware.

Loose freehand shapes hand drawn then scanned in and vectorized.

Neon gradients from presets in adobe software to represent technology.

Create a layout with movement but in a set grid system to emulate order and organization.

3D Vector shapes with analogue scanned in textures to show hands on physical approach with consideration to technology.

Spray paint print finish on a digital print to show hands on approach.

Flow chart of words that breakdown aspects about me within a systematic order to show my methodical approach to problem solving.

3 Textures to show multiple approaches.

An old oil painting from my foundation course using this as one of the 3 textures to emulate multiple/varied approaches but also to symbolise my appreciation of progression using found analogue imagery using traditional mediums applied in a modern contemporary context and output while also using a scanning method to subtly represent technology.

Delivery & Rationale
Using a flowchart as a core for a representation of me with a deconstructed and alternative typography layout an idea of progression was presented yet order was maintained through the neat arrangement with the 3 diamond shapes incorporating a scanned in traditional oil painting that interacts and contrasts with heavy and lighter patterned vector lines as a way of emulating interaction and multiple approaches while slightly referencing the idea of progression by using old work as a way of reflecting on how my process has changed.

Pastel pink and blue are quite bold and niche but the stripped back tones work with the neatness of the layout, the idea behind scanning the posters in was to further reference ideas and technology.

"I am influenced by organization, technology and progression in bold outcomes."

Quick conclusion and takeaway points
Getting back into the swing of set briefs was at first daunting considering the small timeframe we had to finish the work, the most important factor I recognized working with a short period of time is the importance of a strong concept and delivering it in a simple efficient way. I was happy with how it turned out though and feel its a good start to figuring out strong concepts in a short timescale without overthinking things.

I need to figure out a way of explaining concepts and delivery of work in a more efficient and concise way!

Evaluation & Brand identity/Promotion pack

Evaluation & Brand identity/Promotion pack

Finals & Rationale
Working from the name Blank Pigment to carry my creative practice and thought process's the name suggests ideas of:
Creativity through the connotations of pigment.

Pigment is a natural and synthetic material that carries color, this communicates my multi discipline approach that encompass's modern and traditional process's while the word Blank links carries the idea of a pigment carrying color.

I interpreted this in a way that the idea of the word blank can also hint at progression and constant change, a good reflection of how I take a sustainable approach to work by considering ideas and process's to create relevant concepts for intended target audiences.

This supporting GIF emulates the idea of building a brand, using pixelation as a digital reference to pigments, the grey to black color scheme works on an idea of progression of skills through the progression of tones while also visualizing blank and filled pigments.

The broken down logo can be used in still imagery across print media to carry the brand presence and tone of voice across a range of collateral and keep a consistency too the aesthetics.

The 3 lines in the E glyph carry the brand color scheme and communicate my
Conceptual Approach
Sustainable Outcomes
Multi Disciplinary approach

The use of ultramarine blue stock is influenced by the common raw pigment under this name, it can be reproduced and replicated naturally and synthetically, the color blue is also the most direct color wave when it comes to how light is perceived by the eye. This also visualizes the idea of direct and precise communication of ideas to the client which supports my personal, friendly and professional tone of voice.

The idea of using varying opacity and transparent stocks works alongside the progression of tone seen in the logo mark while also symbolizing clarity and honesty. An important factor to maintain good client relationships and clear ideas and resolution.

The pack works as a mailer to send out to clients or studios to pitch potential work or placement, this direct method of communication references a personal relationship with the end user as apposed to the loose connections emails carry. Also emails are more likely to be ignored.

The format of the pack isn't fixed its loose, the idea of this is to express my progression within my creative practice while also referencing the idea of a portfolio and how its a progressive thing that advances as you advance. This will work alongside my online presence/portfolio which will be constantly updated with better and better work.

Module & Branding Evaluation

What Skills have I developed through this module and how effectively did I apply them?
Team work, through the taking care of business brief I developed my skills working in collaboration with a number of likeminded designers with the same goal but approached in diverse ways, working on other peoples specialisms and combining them with my own resulted in our group producing a strong business plan with lots of potential. It also taught me how to prioritize tasks based on our specialisms teaching me how effective a well organized workflow can be when producing a lot of effective work in a short space of time.

Entrepreneurship and professionalism, through readings into Know Your Onions, Think and Grow Rich, Make Your Mark and Designing Brand Identity taught me about a lot of business related factors, I really want to establish my own studio so the information within these books has really gave me a good base of knowledge to work from. From these books and Johns presentations I learnt about copyrighting, marketing, advertising, planning, positive thinking, visualization and subconscious thinking (a little deep but effective if carried out), legalities and full creative and professional journey through a full brand identities.

Ways of approaching a problem, through other modules I have began to develop different ways of tackling a problem, coming at a problem from different angles and view points helps fully understand the potential of the problem at hand giving opportunity for a broader range of ideas to work from. This benefited the work produced for my personal branding and the collaboration module.

Design principles I have really began to develop these skills, using grid systems as a way of fully exploring potential layout within my work not only to emulate structure but also to give a sense of movement and interactivity which supports my approach to design.

Production & resolution, I have produced quite a niche and contemporary outcome for my promotion pack, it uses considered material, layout and format when it comes to visualizing a concept. This is something that I have done well over other modules as well as this one really considering the craft that goes into creating a physical outcome.

What approaches & methods of design principles, production and concepts have I developed and how have they informed my personal creative practice?
Brand identity, through research and influence from books and web content, especially the Designing Brand Identity book I have began to understand every stage of the branding process from name generation to touch points to marketing. This has helped me produce a strong outcome that explores all angles to resonate with a specific audience and communicate a concise and informed message.

Conceptual approach creating a strong concept for all my work is more important than aesthetics too me at this stage, aesthetics come secondary and result in well communicated and presented design.

Thorough research and problem analysis, analyzing a problem and understanding the requirements to solve a problem helps me inform specific research that helps aid further idea generation and later enhances current ideas to develop on.

Target market specific focus, focusing on a specific audience and analyzing what they want helps me produce well informed concepts.

All these considerations resonate with my rationale and final resolution for my brand identity and promotion pack.

What strengths where obvious within my work and how can I expand on these?
Clarity of ideas presented, the resolutions I present are very well thought of when it comes to the concepts they represent and show a strong focus on concepts, problem analysis and through research. Expanding on this will help strengthen the focus of my brand identity and help me focus even more on my creative discipline.

Professional presentation of work, I have started to really consider how final work is presented. Lots of detail photos and well presented high quality photos helps present physical 3D work in a more realistic sense allowing viewers to appreciate the quality, craft, production and techniques that have gone into the work. It also shows confidence in my work. Something that needs to be expanded on so I can keep a positive mindset and keep producing good work.

Concept and delivery of my brand identity and collateral. I was really proud of my concept of my brand identity it really reflects my personality and my creative discipline, in terms of expanding I need to push the Blank Pigment brand and begin to get some freelance work. I want to explore a few print process's to emulate my multi discipline approach a little more.

Looking at a range of international studios, avoiding typical national studios influenced my niche focus and interests.

What weaknesses where obvious overall and how can I improve on them in the future?
Project/Time management and prioritizing, I really messed up with PPP this year when it came to time management, I could have produced a much better final outcome when it came to my personal branding. The concept was there but as I usually have a multi disciplinary approach to techniques and process's I feel experimentation into production and print methods will have strengthened the concept even more, better time planning and setting specific tasks and breaking down a brief into a time scale will help me make better use of my time.

Portfolio presentation, need to focus down rationales and presentation of ideas and resolutions. I like to be thorough when explaining an idea but when it comes to presenting this in a portfolio it gets a little tiresome, presenting ideas and resolutions in a clearer more concise way will aid digestion of the content and save people skipping through and missing important details.

Web presence, due to problems during the year with been taught web design Im going to have to self learn, I have a few books and web resources to work from so I feel the few months over the summer will allow me to fully understand web design and maybe even have a responsive website produced for when I come back in level 6.

What  would I do differently next time and what can I gain from doing this?
Contacting designers, I need to really push this. Think of unique ways of contacting them to gain there attention to give me a better chance of response, if I figure out a certain tone of voice and use of language when communicating a designer I feel this will hopefully spark some dialogue which could result in placements. Its also about the amount I contact, I messages a few this year but relying on 1 or 2 for a response isn't realistic considering how busy they all are.

Producing more external work and enter more competitions for further exposure and allowing me to apply my skill sets and my focused specialisms relating to conceptual multi disciplinary brand identity to different disciplines

Learn web design and produce a properly considered website, all I had for this submission was a Behance page while this is beneficial for gaining initial exposure within the creative industry I do need to learn web design as its important to make a website when creating brand identities as most clients will want one.

Communicate and expand on the idea of a journey continuing from level 4 and expanding into level 6.

How I am now and what im developing on and new skills im focusing in on and what skills to develop on.

Helped influence professional entrepreneur aspects for future business plans and helped our group in the taking care of business module.

Expand on these points that they use within there creative practice and how it influenced me and my practice.

I have been in contact with analouge, sent of a pdf of portfolio and have arranged a visit.
Nice and local near my house.

Advance and progress on my skill sets while learning new things that will benefit my focus on brand identities.
I want to work for myself and see benefit in collaborations, me and Joe share this same view. Wakefield.
Everyone wants a website for branding outcomes.
I only ever design headers or logotype, I wouldn't mind doing a full specimen with application of my concepts and approach to process's and techniques.
Gain some money and exposure at same time making some prints.
Increase exposure by getting freelance work and doing more competition briefs.

Expand on points made mentioned in previous blog posts on potential print events with Niel Ghilchrist.
Me and Joe Lindley live local in Leeds and have a similar working style so over the summer we plan on producing some collaborative work and potentially join up.
Earn some money, get some exposure and do some freelance work and produce some small projects for local projects and business's.
Ambitious but I want to open a studio in Sweden, the studios round here have influenced me and I love the country and culture.
